Date Night Manila Open the planner

A Cubao Expo Date Night, Stop by Stop

A Cubao Expo date night works best as five short stops on foot: flowers, a gallery, dinner, a photo at the mirror, and a last drink behind a photobooth door. Start around 6 PM on a Tuesday to Saturday, when the gallery, the kitchens and the bars are all open, and after the flowers the whole night stays inside one compound on Gen. Romulo Ave.

Before you go in: flowers

Farmers Garden is a row of flower shops beside Farmers Market that stay open 24 hours, so a bouquet is possible at any point in the night. It sits at the other end of Araneta City, about a 12-minute walk from Cubao Expo, so buy first and walk over. Expect to spend under ₱500. If flowers feel like too much for the occasion, skip this stop and nothing else in the plan changes.

6:00 PM: a slow lap of the gallery and the shops

Pablo Galleries shows contemporary Filipino art and is quiet enough to talk in. It closes at 7 PM and is shut on Sundays and Mondays, which is why the plan starts here. Give it half an hour.

The shops around it are the easy part of the night, because there is always something to point at. Good Vibrations Records is a vinyl shop with a listening room and a small bar. John's Antique Shop has old komiks, typewriters and radios, and also closes at 7 PM. WCHA Fashion Haus sells pre-loved clothes, shoes and bags. The Twelfth House is a streetwear store carrying local labels, with a café inside, and it is closed on Mondays. Pick two. Fifteen minutes in each is plenty.

7:00 PM: dinner, three ways

Three kitchens in the compound suit a table for two, and they are different enough that the choice sets the tone.

Habanero Kitchen Bar does oyster sisig, a torched three-cheese pizza and habanero cocktails at Stall 63. Order the Oyster Sisig (₱395 in 2024). It costs ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head, it is closed on Mondays, and the alfresco tables are the pet-friendly ones.

Best of Luck is the cheaper choice. It serves Hong Kong-style Chinese plates and cocktails over two floors of two-seat tables, at under ₱500 a head. Start with the Pork & Shrimp Siomai (₱168 in 2024). It is closed on Mondays, and for a lunch visit check its page first.

Bellini's is an Italian kitchen with truffle ravioli, burrata and tiramisu. It takes reservations through its Facebook or Instagram page, so the table can be settled before the day. It closes at 9:30 PM, which suits an earlier dinner.

The mirror on the way

Between dinner and drinks, stop at the convex mirror near the entrance. Groups line up here for a mirror selfie, and it is the one photo of the night that needs no stranger to hold a phone. It is free, and it is there from 8 AM to midnight daily.

9:00 PM: the door that is a photobooth

INT.Bar is a speakeasy behind a photobooth door. The cocktails are named after films, Tuesdays are movie nights and weekends bring DJ sets. It shares its space with EXT.Cafe, the daytime café side, and the pair is open daily from 9 AM to 12:30 AM, so check what time the bar side takes over. It takes reservations and costs under ₱500 a head.

Two other ways to end the night are a few steps away. Cubao X Brewery is an open-air microbrewery taproom on two floors, open from 3 PM to midnight. Try the Kiamoy Sour. There is no kitchen, so bring food in from the neighbours, and Ichiban Takoyaki is close by for that. Fred's Revolucion is a dive bar with craft beers and Ho Chi Wings, and Rappler named it in its 2019 list of LGBTQ+ safe spaces. It is loud, so save it for when the talking part of the night is done.

If you are not drinking

The Brewman Coffee pours espresso drinks until 11 PM from Tuesday to Sunday and has board games and books to borrow. Silingan Coffee serves coffee and simple rice meals until 11 PM daily and is staffed by families of drug-war victims. For something sweet, llao llao has frozen yogurt in Ali Mall, about a 5-minute walk away, until the mall closes.

Make it yours

That is one version of the night. The night-out planner builds the same shape around your own answers and swaps any stop you do not like. For the wider area, including bowling, the food halls and the hotels around Gateway Mall, read the Cubao date night guide. If this is a first meeting, the shorter plan in first date ideas in Manila fits better: one café and one optional bite. For an anniversary, the anniversary plan starts with the same flower stop and can add a place to stay.
