First Date Ideas in Manila: Short, Public, Easy to Exit
The first date ideas that work in Manila are short, public and easy to leave: one café for about an hour, something to look at next door, and a bite only if both people want to stay. In Cubao that is coffee at The Brewman Coffee, a lap of the Cubao Expo shops and, if it is going well, dinner at Best of Luck.
Five rules for a first meeting
These are worth following by hand in any area.
- Cap the first stop. Keep the meeting place to 75 minutes. Long enough to tell; short enough to leave gracefully.
- Make the second stop optional. Call it "if it's going well" and drop it without changing the plan.
- Nothing loud. A first conversation should not need repeating, so pick somewhere quiet.
- Keep it modest. No fine dining, and nothing above ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head. Nobody should feel they owe the other an evening.
- Put something to look at in between. A shop, a photo spot or a piece of public art gives a quiet pause its excuse.
A first date starts well at 6:30 PM, or 2 PM for a daytime one.
Cubao: coffee, shops, maybe dinner
The whole plan stays inside Cubao Expo on Gen. Romulo Ave.
6:30 PM, meet. The Brewman Coffee pours espresso drinks, is quiet and has board games and books to borrow, which helps when talk runs dry. It is open until 11 PM from Tuesday to Sunday and until 8 PM on Mondays. EXT.Cafe is the alternative: quiet, takes reservations, and coffee was ₱180 in 2024. For a table with no alcohol at all, Silingan Coffee is open until 11 PM daily.
7:30 PM, look at something. The convex mirror by the entrance is the easy pick. Good Vibrations Records has vinyl and a listening room until 10:30 PM and is closed on Mondays. For an afternoon date, John's Antique Shop has old komiks and typewriters until 7 PM.
7:45 PM, if it's going well. Best of Luck has Hong Kong-style Chinese plates over two floors of two-seat tables, under ₱500 a head. It is closed on Mondays. For something faster, Ichiban Takoyaki is a stall in the same compound.
Expect ₱100 to ₱250 a head before the optional bite. If it is not going well, the exit is close: the mirror is by the entrance, and Ali Mall is about a 5-minute walk.
BGC: a walk with an end point
In BGC the meeting place is a walk.
The ArtBGC murals are free and mapped on two routes of 10 and 12 works between Burgos Circle and Serendra. Some pieces have been decommissioned, which only adds something to talk about. The routes are outdoors, so this is a dry-day plan. On a wet day, meet at The Mind Museum, open from 9 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, at under ₱500 a head.
If it is going well: Greenlight Burgers at under ₱500 a head, or Los Tacos MNL at ₱500 to ₱1,500. Look up the address of the burger place before suggesting it.
Makati: Greenbelt by day, the Triangle by evening
Meet at Omotesando Koffee, a Tokyo coffee brand with a branch in Greenbelt 2, at under ₱500 a head.
Look at something. Ayala Museum shows pre-colonial gold and dioramas from 9 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday to Sunday. After hours, Ayala Triangle Gardens is a free park.
If it's going well, Manam at the Triangle serves Filipino comfort food at Ayala Triangle at ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head.
For a morning meeting, Salcedo Saturday Market and Legazpi Sunday Market run from about 7 AM to 2 PM. A market is public, cheap and easy to leave, which is the whole brief. Poblacion is a different kind of night; save its bars for a third date.
Pasay Bay Area: coffee and the sunset
Meet at Bo's Coffee inside SM MOA.
Look at something. Watch the sunset from the esplanade on Seaside Blvd or from MOA Sky, the free rooftop park with viewing decks. Both depend on the weather.
If it's going well, Army Navy has burgers and burritos with a bay view at under ₱500 a head, and Café Adriatico is a bistro one step up.
Stay at MOA. The resorts in Entertainment City are a ride away and priced for a bigger occasion.
Plan the first one
The night-out planner covers Cubao now, with BGC, Makati and the Pasay Bay Area to follow. It applies all five rules without being asked, and any stop can be swapped.
Start from the first date guide. For a costed version, read a Cubao Expo first date for under ₱1,500. The mural routes and the Manila Bay sunset spots have their own guides, and people who would always choose the gallery should read the Gallery Wanderer.
