The Tita at Heart: Cafes in Manila, Markets and an Early Night

For a Tita at Heart, the cafes in Manila to plan around are the ones with a seat and a sensible closing time: EXT.Cafe and The Brewman Coffee in Cubao Expo, Mary Grace Cafe in the Gateway malls and Omotesando Koffee at Greenbelt 2. Below they are sorted by what matters to an early night: which are quiet, which take reservations and when each one shuts.

How the quiz picks a Tita at Heart

Three answers decide it. The pace is "Slow and easy". The second question gets "The sure thing" or "Something a bit different". What makes a good night is "Good food and a long talk". The room can be any of the three, and the drinks answer never changes the result. Answer the second question with "The place nobody's posted yet" and the result is a Hidden-Door Hunter; change the night to "Something to see or hear" and it is a Gallery Wanderer.

The Tita at Heart page says it in a line: brunch, a good wine list, home by ten. The night is an early dinner somewhere comfortable, dessert, done. Anyone can be a tita at heart; the archetypes describe an evening, never a person.

Cubao cafés

Quiet, in Cubao Expo

  • EXT.Cafe is quiet and takes reservations. Coffee was ₱180 in 2024, so expect a little more now. It is the daytime side of a bar, so go in the afternoon.
  • The Brewman Coffee pours espresso drinks and lends board games and books. It is open from noon to 8 PM on Mondays and from 10 AM to 11 PM on other days.
  • Silingan Coffee serves coffee and simple rice meals from 9 AM to 11 PM daily and is staffed by families of drug-war victims.

Indoors, in the Gateway malls

  • Mary Grace Cafe is a café and bakery with a branch in each Gateway mall, at ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head.
  • UCC Park Café is on the ground floor of Gateway Mall 2, at the same price.
  • Cong Caphe is a Vietnamese café on Level 2 of Gateway Mall 2, under ₱500 a head.
  • Puffy's Souffle Pancake Cafe is the dessert café, for soufflé pancakes.

All four keep mall hours, which end at 9 PM from Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, and at 10 PM on Friday and Saturday. Erin's Artists' Lounge and Café on the upper ground floor of Ali Mall is a café and artists' lounge; check its own page for hours.

A Cubao afternoon that ends by eight

2:30 PM, something to look at. Gateway Gallery is on the fifth floor of Gateway Tower, free to visit, quiet and open from 10 AM to 6 PM daily. Its SiningSaysay exhibit tells Philippine history through art.

3:45 PM, coffee. Gateway Mall is about a 5-minute walk away. Take a table at Mary Grace Cafe.

5:30 PM, the early dinner. World Kitchens on Level 4 of Gateway Mall 2 reopens at 5:30 PM from Monday to Thursday after closing at 3 PM, so an early table is the first one of the evening. It is a food hall of 15 show kitchens, with dishes such as cochinillo, gambas al ajillo and unagi hitsumabushi. World Cellar, the wine room inside it, has space for up to 4,000 bottles.

7:00 PM, dessert, done. Che Buono is a gelato counter on the ground floor and takes ten minutes.

For a version with a better seat, Wolfgang's Premiere Lounge is a dine-in cinema with La-Z-Boy recliners. The ticket includes a burger or sandwich and was ₱990 in 2025. Check the schedule and pick the early show.

Markets and coffee in the other areas

Makati. Makati has the markets. Salcedo Saturday Market and Legazpi Sunday Market are farmers' and food markets that run from about 7 AM to 2 PM, and cost under ₱500 a head. Omotesando Koffee is a Tokyo coffee brand with a branch in the reopened Greenbelt 2, and Ayala Museum in the business district is open from 9 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday to Sunday. For the wine list, Good Morning Wines is a wine bar in Salcedo. For the early dinner, People's Palace is a Thai restaurant near Greenbelt Park with a vegetarian menu, at ₱1,500 and up a head.

BGC. By day, The Mind Museum is open from 9 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, and Locavore at Forbes Town has indoor and alfresco tables for a Filipino dinner afterwards.

Pasay Bay Area. Bo's Coffee is a branch of the local coffee chain inside SM MOA. The Aristocrat, founded in 1936, serves chicken barbecue and java rice in the same mall. Watch the sunset from the esplanade on Seaside Blvd and go home.

Plan it and still be home by ten

The night-out planner covers Cubao now and can start a plan in the daytime; the other areas are next.

For more seats, read the guide to cafes in Cubao and the Gateway Mall restaurants, floor by floor. For Makati, there is a morning plan for the Saturday market in Salcedo. More daytime plans are in date ideas in Manila.
