Museum in Makati: An Ayala Museum Date with Dinner After

The museum in Makati to plan a date around is Ayala Museum, which shows pre-colonial gold and dioramas and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 6pm at Makati Ave corner Dela Rosa. Arrive by 4pm, stay until it closes, and go on to dinner at Manam at the Triangle only if you both want the evening to continue.

Hours and tickets

Open: Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm. It is closed on Mondays, so a Monday date needs a different plan.

Tickets: the museum is ticketed and costs under ₱500 a head. Confirm the current ticket price on the museum's visit page before going.

Inside: pre-colonial gold and dioramas are what it is known for. It is entirely indoors, so the first two hours of this date are safe from rain.

Why 4pm

A first date does better with a clear end, and the museum supplies one. Arriving at 4pm gives two hours before the 6pm close. That is long enough to see the gold and the dioramas without hurrying and short enough that nobody runs out of things to say.

A museum also solves the hardest part of a first meeting, which is where to look. There is always something in front of you to react to, and what someone stops at tells you more than small talk does.

At 6pm the building decides for you. If it has gone well, there is a natural next step. If it has not, the date is over at a reasonable hour and nobody has to invent an excuse.

The walk after

Ayala Triangle Gardens is a park with live performances, and in December it has a lights show. It is free to enter, and it sits on Makati Avenue, like the museum.

The gardens are outdoors. In the rain, skip them and go straight to dinner. The December version of this walk has its own plan in a Christmas lights date at the gardens.

Dinner, if it's going well

Manam at the Triangle is at the Ayala Triangle. It serves Filipino comfort food with twists and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, at ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head. It is the natural choice if the walk ends at the gardens.

People's Palace, near Greenbelt Park, is a Thai restaurant with a vegetarian menu, Michelin Selected, at ₱1,500 and up a head. Choose it if one of you does not eat meat, or if the date has earned a bigger dinner.

Kitchens in the business district close at 10 to 11pm. A 6:30pm or 7pm table after a 6pm museum close leaves plenty of room.

One more stop, or not

The museum's pre-colonial gold has a very different partner: The Blind Pig, at Windsor Tower on Legazpi St, is billed as Manila's first speakeasy and has a Braille sign on its door. It costs ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head and runs late. On a first date, save it for when dinner has clearly gone well. On a third date, it is the reason to do the museum at all. The door and its neighbour are in the speakeasies of Makati.

If neither of you is drinking, Omotesando Koffee in Greenbelt 2 is a Tokyo coffee brand's branch, at under ₱500 a head.

The afternoon at a glance

Stopping after the first line is a complete first date. For scale, a night in the business district usually runs ₱1,200 to ₱3,500 a head.

The thinking behind first meetings, short and public and easy to leave, is laid out in first date ideas in Manila. For museum dates in other areas, see a science museum date in BGC and an interactive art museum date in Cubao. If galleries are your usual kind of date, the planner calls that the Gallery Wanderer.

The night-out planner covers Cubao now, and Makati is next. The areas page shows what is live.
