The Easygoing Regular: A Simple Dinner Date in Manila That Works

A dinner date in Manila does not have to be a project: pick one restaurant, add one stop in the same building, and stop there. In Cubao that can be Grace Park and a gelato at Che Buono on the same floor of Gateway Mall 2, or Habanero Kitchen Bar and a beer at Cubao X Brewery in the same compound.

How the quiz picks an Easygoing Regular

This is the result when no answer pulls hard enough to make one of the other ten, so it has the loosest rules. Every route starts with "The sure thing", and none uses "Slow and easy" or "Something to see or hear". Four routes lead here, and the drinks answer never matters:

• "Somewhere in the middle" with "A warm room with some noise". Either "Good food and a long talk" or "Something to do with our hands" works. This is the textbook route.
• "Somewhere in the middle" with "The loud table everyone wants to join" and "Good food and a long talk". With the hands answer instead, it is a Barkada Captain.
• "Somewhere in the middle" with "A corner table for two" and the hands answer. With "Good food and a long talk" instead, it is a Kilig Classic.
• "Out out" with the corner table or the warm room, and the hands answer. With "Good food and a long talk" instead, it is a Kilig Classic at the corner table and a Main Character in the warm room.

The Easygoing Regular page puts it in a line: good food, one extra stop, no fuss. It is one of the eleven archetypes, none of which says anything about who a person is.

Two rules that keep it simple

Same building. Every pairing keeps dinner and the extra stop in one mall or one compound, so there is no walk to plan.

Know the clock. Most mall venues close at 9 PM from Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, and at 10 PM on Friday and Saturday. On a weeknight, have dinner by 7 PM if the second stop is in the mall.

Five dinner-plus-one pairings in Cubao

1. Filipino dinner and gelato. Grace Park serves Filipino farm-to-table cooking on the ground floor of Gateway Mall 2, with soy garlic lamb chops and Negros organic lechon on the menu. It is open from 10 AM to 11 PM daily and costs ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head. Che Buono is a gelato counter on the same floor, a ten-minute stop on mall hours. Go for gelato first on a weeknight; the restaurant is the one that stays open.

2. Italian and a film. Mama Lou's Italian Kitchen is on Level 2 of Gateway Mall 1 and costs ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head. Gateway Cineplex 18 is on Level 4, with 18 screens, Dolby Atmos and recliner seats.

3. Taiwanese and bowling. Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese restaurant on the ground floor of Gateway Mall 2. Paeng's Gateway Bowl on Level 3 has 24 lanes, costs under ₱500 a head and is open until midnight daily, so bowling can go second even after a long dinner.

4. Sisig and a beer. Habanero Kitchen Bar is at Stall 63 of Cubao Expo. Order the Oyster Sisig (₱395 in 2024). It is open until 10 PM from Tuesday to Thursday and 11 PM from Friday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays. Cubao X Brewery is an open-air taproom in the same compound, open until midnight. If nobody is drinking, The Brewman Coffee pours espresso drinks until 11 PM from Tuesday to Sunday.

5. Grill and frozen yogurt. Gerry's Grill is a Filipino grill on the ground floor of Ali Mall, and llao llao is on the upper ground floor. Both keep mall hours.

If something is shut

• Monday: pairing 4 is out, because the sisig kitchen is closed. Use 1, 2, 3 or 5.
• Weeknight after 8 PM: pairings 1 and 3 still work, because one half of each stays open past the mall. Le Bistro, the French restaurant on the ground floor of ibis Styles, is also open until 10 PM daily.
• Rain: pairings 1, 2, 3 and 5 are fully indoors. The taproom in pairing 4 is open-air.
• No film worth seeing: swap the cinema for Quantum Skyview, an atrium under an LED ceiling in Gateway Mall 2, free and good for one photo.

One pairing in each other area

BGC. Dinner at COCHI, modern Filipino cooking with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, or Hikiniku to Come, charcoal-grilled hamburg steak served three ways. Both cost ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head. Then walk part of the ArtBGC mural routes, which are free and outdoors.

Makati. Manam at the Triangle serves Filipino comfort food with twists and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and Ayala Triangle Gardens is a free park in the same Ayala Triangle. Around Greenbelt, pair People's Palace, a Thai restaurant near Greenbelt Park, with a film at the Greenbelt 3 cinemas, six screens that reopened in December 2025.

Pasay Bay Area. Eat at The Aristocrat or Café Adriatico inside SM MOA, both at ₱500 to ₱1,500 a head. The first is known for chicken barbecue and java rice, the second for adobo rice and palabok. Then watch the sunset from the esplanade on Seaside Blvd, or walk the free rooftop park at MOA Sky. Here the extra stop comes first, because the sunset sets the time.
